Where to stay
on Miyajima —
and when to stay
on the mainland.
The island has very few rooms and most of them are ryokan quoting per-person rates with dinner and breakfast included, so the floor sits at roughly double Hiroshima city's. That premium buys one thing: the island between 18:00 and 09:00. Book months ahead for November and any weekend, and know that the mainland ferry terminal is a five-minute walk from the boats.
Stay on the island if you have three Hiroshima days and want the 06:30 shrine and the lit torii; stay in the city if you have two. Miyajima's inventory is small and mostly ryokan with dinner and breakfast included, quoted per person — as an indication rather than a quote, Booking's Miyajima listings start around ¥12,000 against roughly ¥5,500 in the city. Add ¥200 ($1.27) per person per night in prefectural accommodation tax on any room over ¥6,000, collected at the desk rather than by the booking site. If the island is full, Miyajimaguchi and Hatsukaichi on the mainland are five minutes from the ferry.
Why the island costs double, and what that actually buys
The marketMiyajima has a very small number of beds and almost no business hotels. What it has instead is ryokan — traditional inns quoting a per-person rate that includes dinner and breakfast — and that is the whole explanation for the price gap.
So the comparison people make is wrong before it starts. A ¥9,500 business room in Hiroshima with a kettle is not the same product as a per-person island rate with a kaiseki dinner and a served breakfast. Read the total for your party before concluding the island is expensive; then read it again, because per-person pricing does unpleasant things to a family of four.
As an indication of the gap and not a quote: Booking's own listings start around ¥12,000 for Miyajima and roughly ¥5,500 for Hiroshima city. Treat those as a signal of the floor, check live rates for your dates, and expect November to behave like a different market entirely.
Hiroshima Prefecture introduced a ¥200 per person per night accommodation tax on 1 April 2026, on rooms of ¥6,000 or more per person before tax and meals. It applies across the prefecture — the city, Miyajima, Onomichi — and it is not included in prepaid booking totals, so you will be asked for it at check-in. There is no separate Hiroshima city lodging tax.
What the premium buys is time, not comfort. The island's whole commercial apparatus shuts between 16:00 and 18:00 — Senjōkaku at 16:30, the ropeway's last descent at 16:30, Daishō-in and the Treasure Hall at 17:00, Itsukushima Shrine at 18:00 — and the day-trippers go with it. The illuminated torii comes on 30 minutes after sunset and stays lit until 23:00. And the shrine reopens at 06:30, about two and a half hours before the first ferry crowds land, which is the single best hour on the island and cannot be bought any other way.
The honest caveat that most overnight arguments skip: the last JR ferry off the island is 22:14. You can see the illumination and leave. What you cannot do on a day trip is the 06:30 morning.
Island, mainland or city — three places to sleep
ComparedAll three are within about 45 minutes of each other. The differences are price, timing and what is open when you walk outside.
| Where | Indicative floor | What it gets you | Book by | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miyajima island | From around ¥12,000, meals usually included | The 06:30 shrine, the lit torii until 23:00, deer in empty streets. Very little food after 17:00 — eat and shop before then | 2–3 months for November and weekends | WORTH IT |
| Miyajimaguchi / Hatsukaichi (mainland) | Between the island and the city | Five minutes from the ferry pier, anago-meshi at Ueno on your doorstep, and the first boat of the day without an island rate | A few weeks, longer in November | DEPENDS |
| Hiroshima city | From around ¥5,500 | Okonomiyaki counters, the Peace Park at night, and 45 minutes to the island by JR and ferry each morning | Weeks; months for early August | WORTH IT |
The ¥12,000 and ¥5,500 figures are Booking's own starting listings observed in August 2026, cited as an indication of the gap rather than a price you will be quoted. Every one of the three adds ¥200 per person per night in prefectural accommodation tax on rooms of ¥6,000 or more, payable at check-in.
How far ahead to book a Miyajima room
Book byThe island's constraint is supply, not demand management — there are simply not many rooms, so the ladder is steeper than a city's.

Where-to-stay questions
FAQPage schema pairedIs it worth staying on Miyajima?
Yes if Hiroshima is getting three days or more. The island's distinctive hours are 18:00 to 09:00 and they cost roughly double a city room to buy — Booking's island listings start around ¥12,000 against about ¥5,500 for the city. On a two-day trip, sleep in the city and day-trip the island.
How much does a hotel on Miyajima cost?
The floor is indicated at around ¥12,000 on Booking against roughly ¥5,500 in Hiroshima city, but most island rates are quoted per person with dinner and breakfast included, so compare totals rather than headlines. Add ¥200 per person per night in prefectural accommodation tax on any room of ¥6,000 or more.
Is there an accommodation tax in Hiroshima?
Yes — a prefectural tax of ¥200 per person per night, introduced on 1 April 2026, on rooms of ¥6,000 or more per person before tax and meals. It applies on Miyajima, in the city and across the prefecture, and it is not included in prepaid booking totals, so expect to be asked for it at check-in.
How far in advance should I book Miyajima?
2 to 3 months for a normal high-season night, 3 to 4 for weekends and cherry blossom, and 6 or more for mid-to-late November when Momijidani's ~700 maples peak. The island has very few rooms, so the constraint is supply — at 1 month out you are choosing from what is left.
Where should I stay if Miyajima is full?
Miyajimaguchi, on the mainland — a 5-minute walk from the ferry pier, cheaper, with more rooms and Ueno's ¥2,500–3,000 anago-meshi about 1 minute from the station. On Booking it sits under Hatsukaichi, the municipality that covers both the terminal and the island.
Do Miyajima ryokan include dinner?
Almost always dinner and breakfast, at a fixed time — dinner is typically served between 18:00 and 19:00 and is not flexible. Plan around it: do not be halfway down Mount Misen at 17:30, and do your eating and shopping on Omotesandō before 17:00, because very little else is open afterwards.
Can I see the illuminated torii without staying overnight?
Yes. The illumination comes on 30 minutes after sunset and runs to 23:00, and the last JR ferry off the island is 22:14 — so a late day trip works. Note that you cannot enter the shrine during the illumination; it is a view from the shore. What an overnight buys that a late ferry cannot is the 06:30 morning.
Is Miyajima or Hiroshima better as a base?
Hiroshima, for almost everyone. The city has the food, the depth of accommodation, the Peace Park and the transport, and the island is 45 minutes away. Miyajima is worth one night as an experience, not as a base — there is no second day of island to fill.
