The JR Pass loses money
on a Hiroshima trip.
Zero of the ten pages ranking for Hiroshima rail advice give you a JR Pass price, let alone the arithmetic. Here it is. A Tokyo–Hiroshima return costs ¥36,760 unreserved or ¥39,520 on reserved Nozomi. A 7-day pass costs ¥50,000. You lose between ¥10,480 and ¥13,240 buying the pass — and if you then use it on Nozomi, you lose ¥23,480.
Do not buy the national JR Pass for a Hiroshima trip. A Tokyo⇄Hiroshima return is ¥36,760 unreserved, ¥37,820 on reserved Hikari/Sakura or ¥39,520 on reserved Nozomi, against ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass — you lose ¥10,480–13,240. Even Tokyo→Kyoto→Hiroshima→Tokyo comes to about ¥44,060 in separate tickets and still loses by ¥6,000–9,000. Buy the ¥17,000 Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass instead. And if you are buying a national pass anyway, buy direct from the official site after 1 October 2026 — it is holding current prices while agencies raise theirs.
The pass loses, and here is by how much
The arithmetic nobody publishesEvery page ranking for this question tells you the pass exists and none of them do the sum. The sum is not close: on the standard Hiroshima itinerary the national pass costs you between ¥6,000 and ¥13,240 more than simply buying tickets.
A Tokyo⇄Hiroshima return costs ¥36,760 unreserved, ¥37,820 on reserved Hikari or Sakura, or ¥39,520 on reserved Nozomi. A 7-day ordinary pass costs ¥50,000. That is a loss of ¥10,480 to ¥13,240 — roughly $66 to $84 — for the privilege of also being unable to ride the fastest train. Add a Kyoto stop and it barely helps: Tokyo→Kyoto→Hiroshima→Tokyo is about ¥44,060 in separate tickets, still ¥6,000–9,000 short of clearing the pass. From Osaka it is not a decision at all: Shin-Osaka⇄Hiroshima is ¥19,780–21,900 in cash against ¥50,000.
The Nozomi supplement is not a discount, and this line alone is worth the page. Pass holders who want to ride Nozomi pay a supplement equal to the section's full unreserved limited-express charge — verified across seven of seven sections. Tokyo→Hiroshima is ¥6,500, Shin-Osaka ¥4,170, Nagoya ¥4,960, Okayama and Fukuyama ¥2,530, Hakata ¥3,400. Ride Nozomi both ways from Tokyo on a 7-day pass and your total is ¥63,000 — ¥23,480 more than just buying reserved Nozomi tickets at ¥39,520. Never do this.
The alternative on the pass is slow. There is no direct Hikari from Tokyo to Hiroshima, so pass holders change at Shin-Osaka and take about five hours, against 3h49 direct on Nozomi. You are paying more to arrive later.
One more thing that has quietly broken every comparison online: JR abolished its 10% round-trip discount (往復割引) on 14 March 2026. At roughly 894km, Tokyo⇄Hiroshima was a classic beneficiary, so every cost comparison published before that date is about ¥2,380 too low on the cash side — which used to make the pass look worse than it does now, and still does not make it good.

| Pass | Now | From 1 Oct 2026 | Child 6–11 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day ordinary | ¥50,000 · ~$317 | ¥53,000 · ~$336 | Half price | The tier almost everyone means. It loses ¥10,480–13,240 against a cash Tokyo⇄Hiroshima return |
| 7-day Green | ¥70,000 · ~$444 | ¥74,000 · ~$469 | Half price | Reserved Green-car seating. The largest buy-direct saving after 1 October, at ¥4,000–7,000 |
| 14-day ordinary | ¥80,000 · ~$507 | ¥84,000 · ~$533 | Half price | ¥5,714 a day now, ¥6,000 after. The tier that most often clears for a genuine country-crossing trip |
| 21-day ordinary | ¥100,000 · ~$634 | ¥105,000 · ~$666 | Half price | ¥4,762 a day, the cheapest per-day rate. Still a lot of train to justify from one city |
| JR Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass | ¥17,000 · 5 days | — | See operator | The recommendation. Less than a cash Osaka⇄Hiroshima return, and it includes the JR Miyajima ferry |
| JR Setouchi Area Pass | ¥22,000 · 7 days | — | See operator | The other regional option. Neither regional pass covers the Tokaido Shinkansen, so neither reaches Hiroshima from Tokyo |
The arbitrage, and it is the most valuable line on this page. The 1 October 2026 rise applies to overseas agencies and authorised retailers. The official JR Pass website is holding current prices "for the time being" — so from 1 October, buying direct saves ¥3,000–5,000 on an ordinary pass and ¥4,000–7,000 on a Green one. Buy direct, and do not assume that gap lasts. Dollar prices convert at ¥157.7 = $1, the rate on 4 August 2026. Treat every $ figure as a snapshot and the ¥ figure as the real price.

| Itinerary | Cash tickets | 7-day pass | You lose | Verdict |

The last row is the trap. The Nozomi supplement equals the section's full unreserved limited-express charge — Tokyo→Hiroshima ¥6,500, Shin-Osaka ¥4,170, Nagoya ¥4,960, Okayama and Fukuyama ¥2,530, Hakata ¥3,400 — verified across seven of seven sections. It is not a top-up, it is the whole express fare again. Note also that JR abolished its 10% round-trip discount on 14 March 2026, so every online comparison older than that shows cash costs about ¥2,380 too low.
What the national pass does and does not get you in Hiroshima
What it coversThe Hiroshima-specific coverage, which is more limited and more useful than people expect in different places.
| Thing | Covered? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Nozomi shinkansen | No | The fast Sanyo service is excluded. You ride Hikari, Sakura or Kodama, which is slower on every leg into Hiroshima |
| Hikari / Sakura / Kodama shinkansen | Yes | The covered services. Perfectly comfortable, meaningfully slower on a Tokyo run |
| Maple-loop bus | Yes | Hiroshima Station to the Peace Memorial Park in ~17 minutes, free with the pass — show the driver. One unified route since 18 July 2026 |
| JR ferry to Miyajima | Yes | The JR West ferry is covered. The identically priced Matsudai ferry is not |
| Miyajima visitor tax | No | ¥100 per person per crossing, and the pass never covers it. You buy a separate tax ticket at the terminal |
| Hiroden streetcars | No | Hiroden is a private operator. Flat ¥240 a ride, or the ¥700 day pass from ride three |
| Airport limousine bus | No | A road service from an airport ~50km out. Fare unverified — check with the operator |
| Miyajima Ropeway | No | ¥2,000 round trip, ¥1,100 one way. Nothing on the island is covered by a rail pass |
The loop-bus line is the one genuine in-city benefit, and it is worth roughly ¥480 a day against two ¥240 tram rides. That does not move a ¥50,000 decision, but it is free money once you already hold the pass.
The practical bit
Plan your visitThe narrow cases where the national pass still wins
When it does clearA genuinely country-crossing week. Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and back inside seven days is the shape the pass was designed for, and at that intensity ¥50,000 does real work. Price the legs first anyway — the Hiroshima portion of that trip is still losing money for you.
A 14- or 21-day trip with constant movement. ¥5,714 and ¥4,762 a day respectively are the cheapest per-day rates on offer. If Hiroshima is stop four of eight over three weeks, this is your product. From 1 October those become ¥6,000 and ¥5,000.
You value not thinking about it. A pass removes ticket-buying friction for two weeks, and that is worth something — just not ¥33,000 more than the ¥17,000 Kansai–Hiroshima pass if Hiroshima is the centre of gravity.
And two timing points, because they are the only urgent things here. From 1 October 2026 the rise hits overseas agencies and authorised retailers, but the official JR Pass site is holding current prices "for the time being." Buying direct after that date saves ¥3,000–5,000 on an ordinary pass and ¥4,000–7,000 on a Green one — but treat that as a window, not a policy, because it can close without notice. If you would rather not gamble, buy before 1 October and the question disappears.
The JR Pass and Hiroshima — the questions people ask
FAQPage schema pairedHow much is the JR Pass in 2026?
¥50,000 for the 7-day ordinary pass, about $317, rising to ¥53,000 on 1 October 2026. Green 7-day goes ¥70,000 to ¥74,000, the 14-day ¥80,000 to ¥84,000 and the 21-day ¥100,000 to ¥105,000. Children aged 6 to 11 pay half on every tier.
Is the JR Pass worth it for Hiroshima?
No — it loses money. A Tokyo⇄Hiroshima return is ¥36,760 unreserved or ¥39,520 on reserved Nozomi, against ¥50,000 for the pass, so you are down ¥10,480 to ¥13,240. Even adding a Kyoto stop only gets separate tickets to about ¥44,060, still ¥6,000–9,000 short. Buy the ¥17,000 Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass instead.
Does the JR Pass cover the Nozomi to Hiroshima?
No, and paying the supplement is a trap. The Nozomi supplement equals the section's full unreserved limited-express charge — ¥6,500 from Tokyo, ¥4,170 from Shin-Osaka, ¥2,530 from Okayama or Fukuyama, ¥3,400 from Hakata. Riding Nozomi both ways from Tokyo on a 7-day pass totals ¥63,000, which is ¥23,480 more than simply buying the tickets.
How long does the JR Pass take from Tokyo to Hiroshima?
About five hours, because there is no direct Hikari — pass holders change at Shin-Osaka. Nozomi does it direct in 3h49 but is not covered. So the pass makes you pay ¥10,000 more to arrive over an hour later, which is the clearest way to see why it fails on this route.
When does the JR Pass price increase, and can I avoid it?
1 October 2026, and yes, possibly. The rise applies to overseas agencies and authorised retailers; the official JR Pass website is holding current prices "for the time being," so buying direct after that date saves ¥3,000–5,000 on an ordinary pass and ¥4,000–7,000 on a Green one. Do not assume that window stays open.
Does the JR Pass cover the ferry to Miyajima?
The JR West ferry, yes — and its sailings leaving Miyajimaguchi between 09:10 and 16:10 detour past the Great Torii at no extra charge, outbound only. What no pass covers is the ¥100 visitor tax, which you buy separately at the terminal. The identically priced Matsudai ferry is not covered.
Does the JR Pass work on Hiroshima trams?
No. Hiroden is a private operator charging a flat ¥240 a ride. The pass does cover the Maple-loop bus from Hiroshima Station, which reaches the Peace Memorial Park in about 17 minutes — show the driver, and carry ¥240 as a backup because JR West's own pages do not advertise it.
Has anything else changed in Japanese rail pricing this year?
Yes, and it has broken every older comparison. JR abolished its 10% round-trip discount on 14 March 2026, and at roughly 894km Tokyo⇄Hiroshima was a classic beneficiary — so any cost comparison published before that date understates the cash option by about ¥2,380. The pass still loses even after that correction.
